BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH DAKOTA
Ben Reifel Visitor Center designed by Cecil Doty and Lucas, Craig, Whitwam (Rapid City), 1957-58

The Ben Reifel Visitor Center at Badlands National Park expresses the simple design of many Mission 66 buildings. The low-lying structure blends into the landscape while details in the construction emphasize the building's relationship with the surrounding environment. Note the rough texture and color of the bricks--selected and laid in courses to resemble the striated character of the Badlands rock formations (below right and bottom).
