THOMAS (TOM) PHIFER, FAIA (1953-)

Phifer was born in Columbia SC and is best known for designing art museums. He earned a BA in architecture in 1975 and an MA in architecture in 1977, both from Clemson. He also studied at the Daniel Center for Architecture and Urban Studies in Genoa, Italy. Phifer held the Stevenson Chair at the University of Texas and taught at Cornell, Penn, Yale, and Cooper Union. He launched his firm in 1997 after a decade of working for Richard Meier. 2001 - The Moyra Mulholland House, aka Taghkanic House, 223 Old Route 82, Hudson NY. Seven bedrooms and nine baths with 8,800 sf on nearly 400 acres. Commissioned 1997. Dan Kiley was the landscape architect. Won a 2008 American Architecture Award; 1999 Progressive Architecture Award. Sold in 2019. Listed for rent in 2022.




2003 - The Walter and Anita Levy House, aka Spencertown House,
274 Fire Hill Road, Spencertown NY. Commissioned 1998. Won a 2002 AIANY Design Award; 2003 American Architecture Award. Photos by Scott Frances/ESTO. Sold in 2015 to Nicholas and Cynthia Lumermann.


2007 - The Cristina Grajales and Isabelle Kirshner House, 1156 Netherwood, Salt Point NY. 9 acres, 2,150 sf.



2008 - aka Boulder House, 1035 5th Street, Boulder CO. At just over 5,000 sf, his house rests just below Boulder's Blue Line, the highest allowable elevation for construction on the slopes above the city. For sale in 2014. Sold in 2017 to Takuma Sato, the only Japanese driver to win the Indy 500.


2008 - The Scott Newman and Gregory Long House, aka Millbrook House, aka Junto Farm, Poole Hill Road, Ancram NY. Set on a 200 acre site. Commissioned 1999. Landscape design by Oehme, van Sweden and starting in 2006, Peter Meyer of Raycroft Meyer.




2008 - aka Fishers Island House, aka Clay Point House, 5722 Clay Point Road, Fishers Island NY. Photos by Carlos Marques. Commissioned 2004. For sale in 2025.


2010 - The Constance Darrow and Angelo Lombardi Apartment Renovation, 1010 5th Avenue, Unit 14F, New York NY. Renovation of 2 full-floor grand apartments, that had been subdivided into 5 smaller apartments, to one, 1500 sf one bedroom apartment.


2010 - aka Santa Rosa House, Santa Rosa CA. Commissioned 2010. Likely unbuilt.




2010 - aka Fifth Avenue Apartment, Fifth Avenue, New York NY. Commissioned 2008. Overlooks MOMA and Central Park. Won a 2010 AIANY Award; 2011 American Architecture Award. Structural engineer, Robert Silman.  Status unknown.


2011 - aka Long Island House, Long Island NY. Unbuilt.


 2011 - aka Madison WI House. This is the one designed like a serpentine garden wall.  Status unknown.


2012 - aka New Zealand House, Tara Iti, New Zealand. Commissioned 2012. Unbuilt.


2013 - The Kyle Krause House, aka Midwest House, aka House in the Midwest, Napa Ranch Road, Boonville IA. Commissioned 2004.Won a 2011 AIANY Honor Award; 2011 American Architecture Award.


2013 - aka Jupiter Island Florida House, Jupiter Island FL. Unbuilt.




2013 - aka Palm Beach House, Palm Beach FL. Unbuilt.



2015 - aka New Zealand House, Te Arai New Zealand. Assume unbuilt.
