Ralph S. Twitchell AIA

    AB degree, 1910, from Rollins College, Winter Park, FL;
    two years at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec; BS and MS in architecture, 1920, from Columbia University, New York.
    Studied and travelled in France, Italy, and Greece.
Career

Worked as a draftsman in New York for a number of architectural firms; while working for Dwight James Baum came to Sarasota, Florida to supervise building of the John Ringling Mansion "Cà d'Zan". Opened his own practice in Sarasota in 1936. Worked with Paul Rudolph in 1941 and again from 1947 to 1952. Freely cited Rudolph as being the "ideas man" in their partnership, although he was an innovative architect in his own right and his construction ability was crucial in realizing some of Rudolph's innovative ideas. Partnered with son Tolyn from 1959 to 1965.

Known for

Many private residences (most with Rudolph), including the Deeds Residence in Siesta Key, the Lamolithic Development in Sarasota, and the Hudson Beach House in Venice. Internationally famous for his association with Rudolph as a founder of the Sarasota School.
