Bottom photo by Michael Locke. 1966 - The Dennis and Lynne Smith House, 304 Sycamore Place, Sierra Madre CA. Dennis Smith designed the house for his family during the brief interlude when he left the Buff & Hensman to seek independent work. Smith was the last person to become a partner in the firm, which he joined in 1963 after graduating from USC. He became a partner in 1988 and its president in 1997 the year Donald Hensman retired. The Smiths sold the house and moved to Arcadia during their daughters’ high school years. After becoming empty nesters, they were looking to downsize. As fate would have it, the house which Smith originally built in 1966 came on the market again in 2012 and the Smiths repurchased it. The house had been compromised with unwise alterations; the wide decks that had previously wrapped around the avocado grove had been seriously diminished in size. Smith brought his uncompromising craftsmanship to the restoration project; the house stands today pretty much as it did when it was first built, with the exception of the kitchen, which has been sensitively modernized with up-to-date appliances; the Formica counter tops have been replaced with a more enduring stone.
