California Arts & Architecture was formed in 1929 by a merger of Pacific Coast Architect, established 1911, and California Southland, established 1918. By 1933 the Depression reduced it to 30 pages and into bankruptcy when John Entenza bought it in 1938. Under Entenza's editorship, California Arts & Architecture changed to an avant-garde magazine publishing low-cost houses rich with social concern. The word California was dropped in 1944.

Over time, Arts & Architecture was best known for a 20-year-long program called the Case Study Houses. David Travers took over as editor from John Entenza in 1962. The magazine ended in 1967, revived 1981-1985 as a quarterly by Barbara Goldstein, then closed for good. A+A was one of architecture's most cherished publications.
