The magazine began as Modernist in 1998. After the first issue, according to co-publisher Miriam Arno Assion, the New York Art Deco Society laid claim to the magazine title "Modernist" and demanded money. To avoid this, Assion and co-publisher David Rago changed the name to Modernism. Issues published quarterly. Publication ceased with the Winter 2012/2013 issue (volume 15, number 4).
