EDWARD R. (ED) NILES, FAIA (1935-)

Niles was born in Nashville TN and was moved as a baby to an orphanage in Los Angeles CA after the death of his parents. There he showed a keen talent for building. He graduated from Hamilton HS in Los Angeles then from USC in architecture in 1961. He interned with Quincy Jones (who was his professor at USC his senior year), Craig Ellwood, and Carl Maston.  He married at 21, and is still married at nearly 90. He taught at USC from 1964 until 1996. He started his own small office in 1967. For four years around 1990, he had coffee regularly with John Lautner. His daughter, Lisa, is also an architect.

1969 - The Pasadena Federal Housing Project Pepper Redevelopment, Washington Blvd and Sunset, Pasadena CA. Three low cost apartment buildings, 137 units, cluster type housing. Designed with Carl Maston. Built by Sproul Homes. Ray Kappe was also involved in the project.


1970 - The Ed Niles and Remo Vecchi Cabin, aka Lake Arrowhead Cabin, Lake Arrowhead CA. Built by designed with architect Remo Vecchi. Sold. Status unknown.


1971 - The Ed Niles House I, 6070 Ramirez Canyon, Malibu CA. His first house in Malibu. 3000sf. A private tunnel under the Pacific Coast Highway leads to Paradise Cove. Sold to Clayton and Vivian Camburn. Sold in 2003 to Sam Simon.

1972 - The Howard Matlow House, 28980 Cliffside Drive, Malibu CA. Deeded around 2011 to daughters Linda and Stephanie. 


1974 - The Richard P. and Cally Stenger House, 24832 Malibu Road, Malibu CA.. Commissioned in 1974. Sold in 1998. Sold to Saul Levine in February 2001. Torn down in 2003. 


1972 - The Zeffren House, Malibu CA. Status unknown.

1973 - The Muir House, Malibu CA. Status unknown.

1978 - The Dorn and Carla Schmidt House I, 6962 Wildlife Road, Malibu CA. Commissioned in 1974. Sold in 1986 to Johnny Carson. Deeded to Alexis Carson. Sold in 2007 to Sidney and Caroline Kimmel, who did a remodel. Deeded in 2010 to the Burr Family Trust. Sold in 2020 to Wildlife Bluff LLC/Riaz Valani.


1978 - The Rotstein House, Malibu CA. Status unknown.


1977 - The Dan and Elda Unger Renovation, 6910 Wildlife Road, Malibu CA.  Original house built in 1949.  Madonna and Sean Penn got married in this house.  Sold in 1989.  Sold in 1996 to Level Four Business Management.


1978 - The Milton Sidley House I, Serra Retreat Road, Malibu CA. Deeded to Sidley's son.  Status unknown.

1997 - The Lambert House, Malibu CA. Unbuilt.


1998 - The Dorothy Meier House, aka Power Plant, 21757 Castlewood Drive, Malibu CA. 2900sf. Commissioned in 1991. Featured in GA Houses 52. Structural engineers, Dimitry Vergun and Isaak Basman. Built by Behr Construction. There was a guest house addition. When Meier passed away she left the property to the UCLA Foundation which sold the property in late 2000 or early 2001. Built. The cylinder was her master bedroom. Meier died, and the house was sold. Sold in 2020. Status unknown.


Around 1999 - The Robert (Bob) and Pamela Whitham House II. 3900sf. Commissioned around 1986. Built by Whitham, largely from block.


2000 - The Gadraz House, aka Malibu Road Addition, 24434 Malibu Road, Malibu CA. House originally built in 1979. Addition commissioned in 1995. 6,500 sf. Sold to Tyler Alexandra Gallagher Ellis, daughter of Perry Ellis. Sold around 2006 to David Gundlach, who died in the house under suspicious circumstances in 2011. Sold in 2012 to Steve Gozini (BH Malibu Road LLC).


2000 - The Jeff and Melody Klein Residence, 402 The Strand, Hermosa Beach CA. Commissioned in 1997. Featured in GA Houses 52. Designed with daughter Lisa Niles McCarthy. Structural engineers, Dimitry Vergun and Isaak Basman. Renovated in 2001.


Around 2000 - The Bruce S. and Marilyn Gillis House, Kona HI. Commissioned in 1998. Status unknown.

2003 - The Harry Acker House, 280 North Compass Drive, Fort Lauderdale FL.  On the Intracoastal Waterway.  Deeded to his wife upon his passing.  Status unknown.

2010 - The Raffi Cohen House, 1169 Loma Linda Drive, Beverly Hills CA. Built by Galaxy Commercial Construction Corp., Maya Steel Fabricators Inc., Richard Montes, and J.T. Wimsatt Contracting Co. Inc. The massive half cylinder features a garden courtyard enclosed in walls of glass and a sail-shape infinity pool. Deeded in 2011 to RCR Media House LLC. Sold in 2014 to BiLLC. For sale in 2024.
