EDWARD R. (ED) NILES, FAIA (1935-)

Niles was born in Nashville TN and was moved as a baby to an orphanage in Los Angeles CA after the death of his parents.  He graduated from Hamilton HS in Los Angeles then from USC in architecture in 1961. He interned with Quincy Jones (who was his professor at USC his senior year), Craig Ellwood, and Carl Maston.  He married at 21, and is still married at nearly 90. He taught at USC from 1964 until 1996. He started his own office in 1967. For four years around 1990, he had coffee regularly with John Lautner. His daughter, Lisa, is an architect.


1963 - Apartment Complex, El Segundo Boulevard, Gardena CA. Designed while working with Carl Maston. Received an honorable mention in the Homes for Better Living apartment division, sponsored by the AIA with American Home and House+Home.

1969 - The Pasadena Federal Housing Project Pepper Street Redevelopment, Washington Blvd and Sunset, Pasadena CA. Three low cost apartment buildings, 137 units, cluster type housing. Designed with Carl Maston. Built by Sproul Homes.  All townhouses, a first for the Federal Government.


1970 - The Ed Niles and Remo Vecchi Cabin, aka Lake Arrowhead Cabin, Lake Arrowhead CA. Near the UCLA Conference Center. Built by designed with architect Remo Vecchi. Sold. Status unknown.



1971 - The Ed and Kay Niles House, 5924 Ramirez Canyon, Malibu CA. Alternate address Pacquet Place.  Sold in 1995 to Henry and Kathryn Holguin. Sold in 2016 to C & L Properties.   Sold in 2024.


1972 - The Ziffren House, Malibu CA. Published in the LA Times.  On the ocean. Status unknown.


1973 - The Muir House, Malibu CA. Status unknown.


1973 - The Howard Matlow House, 28970 Cliffside Drive, Malibu CA.



1974 - The Richard P. and Cally Stenger House, 24832 Malibu Road, Malibu CA. Sold in 1998. Sold to Saul Levine in 2001.  Renovated by another architect away from the Niles design.




1976 - The Lewis House, Malibu CA. Featured in GA Houses 18.  Unbuilt.


1980 - The Epstein House, Malibu CA.  5 acres.  Near Zuma Beach. Commissioned 1976.  8000 sf.  Featured in GA Houses 18.  Built.  Destroyed in a fire around 2019. 


1976 - The Paul and Tanya Rotstein House, 6166 Ramirez Canyon Rd, Malibu CA.  Sold in 1989, 2003. Sold in 2010 to Michael O'Rourke.  Significantly expanded, not by Niles.  Sold in 2018 to Maple Equity LLC.  Available for rent.  


1977 - The Dan and Elda Unger Renovation, 6910 Wildlife Road, Malibu CA.  Original house built in 1949.  Featured in GA Houses 18. Madonna and Sean Penn got married in this house.  Sold in 1989.  Significantly renovated, not by Niles.  Sold in 1996 to Level Four Business Management.


 

1978 - The Milton Sidley House I,  3701 Serra Road, Malibu CA. Commissioned 1972. Deeded to Michael and Wendy Sidley.  Featured in GA Houses 18. 


1978 - The Dorn and Carla Schmidt House, 6962 Wildlife Road, Malibu CA. Commissioned in 1974. Featured in GA Houses 18. Sold in 1986 to Johnny Carson. Niles designed a tennis pavilion for Carson around 1986, also featured in GA Houses 18, last photo.  Deeded around 2005 to Alexis Carson.  Sold in 2007 to Sidney and Caroline Kimmel, who did a remodel. Sold in 2020 to Wildlife Bluff LLC/Riaz Valani.

1985 - The Dorn and Carla Schmidt Renovation, aka Schmidt House II, 28837 Grayfox Street, Malibu CA. Originally designed in 1946 by Maynard Lyndon.  Renovated again 2000.  Sold in 2006 to Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, still owner as of 2023. Available for rent.


1985 - The Michael and Suzanne Tennenbaum House I, 23318 Malibu Colony Rd, Malibu CA. Still owners as of 2023.

1989 - The Michael and Suzanne Tennenbaum House II, aka Cube House, 307 Rockledge Road, Vail CO. Commissioned in 1986. 5132sf. Built by Schaeffer Construction. Vail citizens protested loudly during site approvals. Sold around 2018.


1989 - The Robert (Bob) and Pamela Whitham House I, 6012 Galahad Drive, Malibu CA. Commissioned in 1984. An early scheme was featured in GA Houses 18.  Sold in 2003 to James and Donna Mills. Sold in 2004 to Fred Segal. Deeded in 2009 to Nina Segal-Sisino.


1989 - The Jonathan and Nancy Goodson House, 33336 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu CA.  Renovated in 1996. Sold in 2003 to Kolawa Malibu Properties LLC/Adam Kolawa.

1993 - The Pat and Dan Wilen House, aka Malibu House, 33583 Mulholland Highway, Malibu CA. Commissioned in 1989. Engineering by Dimitry Vergun and Isaak Basman.  16.9 acres. 5 bedroom/6 baths, just over 7,000 sf. Featured in Hyperwest by Alan Hess; GA Houses 49. Includes an underground music studio, a 60 foot lap pool, a helipad, and underground garage. Sold in 2003 to Graham Henman. Sold in 2017 to David and Jennifer Eisman, who did a renovation.

1997 - The William and Sabra Niles House, 34405 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu CA. Next door to the Ed and Kay Niles House 2.  Deeded to the Niles Family Trust.  Available for rent.


Around 1997 - The Ed and Kay Niles House 2, aka K's Residence, 34555 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu CA. Commissioned in 1995. Featured in GA Houses 52. 20 acres. Structural engineers, Dimitry Vergun and Isaak Basman. Built by Niles.


1997 - The Lambert House, Malibu CA. Unbuilt.


1998 - The Dorothy Meier House, Malibu CA. 2900sf. Commissioned in 1991. Featured in GA Houses 52. Structural engineers, Dimitry Vergun and Isaak Basman. There was a guest house addition. When Meier passed away she left the property to the UCLA Foundation which sold the property in late 2000 or early 2001. The cylinder was her master bedroom.  Status unknown.


1999 - The Robert (Bob) and Pamela Whitham House II, 7026 Dume Drive, Malibu CA.  3900sf. Commissioned around 1986. Built by Whitham, largely from block. 


2000 - 3884 Rambla Orienta, Malibu CA.  Sold in 2017 to Kevin A. Frankel.


2000 - The Craven House, aka Malibu Road Addition, aka Malibu Road House, 24434 Malibu Road, Malibu CA. House originally built in 1979. Sold to Gadraz. Addition commissioned in 1995. 6,500 sf. Sold to Tyler Alexandra Gallagher Ellis, daughter of Perry Ellis. Sold around 2006 to David Gundlach, who died in the house under suspicious circumstances in 2011. Sold in 2012 to Steve Gozini (BH Malibu Road LLC).


2000 - The Jeff and Melody Klein Residence, 402 The Strand, Hermosa Beach CA. Commissioned in 1997. Featured in GA Houses 52. Designed with daughter Lisa Niles McCarthy. Structural engineers, Dimitry Vergun and Isaak Basman. Renovated in 2001.


Around 2001 - The Michael Mahoney House, 5396 Horizon, Malibu CA.  Sold in 2009 to Asher and Manij Taban.  Destroyed in the fire.


2003 - The Harry Acker House, 280 North Compass Drive, Fort Lauderdale FL.  On the Intracoastal Waterway.  Deeded to his wife.  Status unknown.


 

2006 - The Bruce S. and Marilyn Gillis House II, 72-3168 Makani Eka Place, Kailua-Kona HI. Commissioned in 1998.  Unbuilt.

Inc. The massive half cylinder features a garden courtyard enclosed in walls of glass and a sail-shape infinity pool. Deeded in 2011 to RCR Media House LLC. Sold in 2014 to BiLLC. For sale in 2024.
