VUKO TASHKOVICH (1938-1996)
Vuko Tashkovich was born in Skopje in the Macedonian
Republic, and with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt and
Yugoslav Marshall Josip Broz Tito came to the US in 1958
with his father Gligor, a former Yugoslavia Senator and
civil engineer. Tashkovich graduated in Architecture at
Cornell University in 1963 and worked under
Eliot Noyes,
John Johansen,
and
I. M. Pei.
He ultimately chose not to take the New York State
architectural licensing exam because the state prohibited
licensed architects from serving as builders. At 28, he
became an independent builder under Pound Ridge
Contemporaries, where he would often buy land suitable for
building and design, build, and then sell the property to
fund the development of his next project. During his 30-year
career, he designed and built 57 houses, 28 of which were in
Pound Ridge, New York. He came under criticism in 1974 from
the New York State Association of Architects, which
contended that Tashkovich was "undermining the licensing
system set up to maintain high standards and protect the
public." However, Tashkovich maintained a high-quality,
ethical practice, thus proving the board wrong. Tashkovich
married Stefanie Lipsit, whom he met at Cornell, and they
had two sons, Gligor and Mark.
