JAMES (JIM) L. CUTLER, FAIA (1949-)

Cutler has BA and MA architecture degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He founded Cutler Anderson Architects in 1977 on Bainbridge Island WA. Cutler Anderson also designs house products including hardware, lighting, and furniture. Cutler is an active juror for design competitions, lecturer at major architecture events, and was a founding member of the Bainbridge Island Land Trust. His most famous house was for Bill and Melinda Gates, designed with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.


1979 - The James Daubenberger House, 1042 Turtleback Lane, Port Townsend WA. Sold in 2009. Won a AIA Seattle Honor Award; AIA/Western Red Cedar Association Merit Award.


1984 - The Parker Residence, Bainbridge Island WA. Converted from a net drying shed in an old industrial harbor.

Around 2001 - The Reeve Residence, aka Lopez Island Residence, Salmon Point, Lopez Island WA. Engineers, Coffman; interiors, Susan Okamoto; built by Russet Construction. Won an AIA Seattle Award; AIA Sunset Magazine Western Home Award; Wood Design Honor Award. Featured in Architectural Record Houses of 2002.

2003 - The Long Residence, Orcas Island WA. A guesthouse was built down the hill, project architect Chad Harding. Won an AIA Seattle Merit Award; American Wood Council Honor Award; AIA Sunset/Magazine Merit Award.

2003 - aka Mallorca Residence, Puerto D'Andratx, Mallorca, Spain.


2004 - aka Custom House, Innsbrook Resort, Innsbrook MO. Designed with Lindal Cedar Homes. Building materials were sold by Lindal but Cutler was hired to consult on the build. Not sure how many were built or if there were different styles. Other architects to partner with Lindal include Marmol Radziner and Bates/Masi.

2008 - The Sonoma Coast House, Sonoma Coast CA. Won an AIA Seattle Honor; Canadian Wood Council Award.


2005 - The Susan Orlean and John Gillespie House, Hudson Valley area NY. 56 acres. Sold in 2021.
