JAMES (JIM) L. CUTLER, FAIA (1949-)
Cutler grew up in Kingston PA. He has BA and MA architecture degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied under Louis Kahn. He founded James Cutler Architects in 1977 in Bainbridge Island WA. Bruce Anderson later joined and the firm became Cutler Anderson. Cutler also designs house products including hardware, lighting, and furniture. Cutler is an active juror for design competitions, lecturer at major architecture schools and events, and was a founding member of the Bainbridge Island Land Trust. His most famous house was for Bill and Melinda Gates, listed under partner Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.
1979 - The James Daubenberger House, 1042 Turtleback Lane, Port Townsend WA. Sold in 2009. Won a AIA Seattle Honor Award.
1980 - 6240 NE Tolo Road, Bainbridge Island WA. 4.78 acres. 1792 sf. Sold in 2017 to Niele Gillooly and Foster Careen.
1984 - The Jim and Lucille Parker Residence, 5949 Rose Loop NE, Bainbridge Island WA. Converted from a net drying shed in an old industrial harbor. Won an AIA National Design Award. Sold in 2018.
1987 - The Virginia Bloedel and Bagley Wright Guest House, 134 Huckleberry Trail, Seattle WA. Main house designed by Arthur Erickson. Featured in Architectural Record Houses of 1989. Built by Charter Construction; photo by Peter Aaron; structural engineer, Greg Hiatt. Sold to Richard Weisman.

1994 - The Elinor and John Paulk House, 6519 Jermar Lane NW, Seabeck WA. Structural, Ratti Swenson Purvix; photo, Art Grice; built by Pleasant Beach Construction. Still in the Paulk family as of 2019.
1999 - aka Pine Forest Cabin, Winthrop WA. Structural engineer, Monte Clark; built by Bjornsen; photos by Art Grice. Won an AIA National Honor Award; AIA Seattle Honor Award; AIA Pacific Northwest Merit Award; American Wood Council Merit Award.
2001 - The Richard Preston House, aka Freestone Farm, 318 Hopewell Amwell Road, Hopewell NJ. Sold in 2023.
2001 - The Loel Fenwick House, aka Tanglefoot, 100 Waterbird Landing, Coolin ID. Project architects, Lee Braun and David Wagner; structural, Coffman Engineers; built by Humble Homes; photos, Art Grice. Status unknown.
