JAMES (JIM) L. CUTLER, FAIA (1949-)

Cutler grew up in Kingston PA. He has BA and MA architecture degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied under Louis Kahn. He founded James Cutler Architects in 1977 in Bainbridge Island WA. Bruce Anderson later joined and the firm became Cutler Anderson. Cutler also designs house products including hardware, lighting, and furniture. Cutler is an active juror for design competitions, lecturer at major architecture schools and events, and was a founding member of the Bainbridge Island Land Trust. His most famous house was for Bill and Melinda Gates, listed under partner Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.


1979 - The James Daubenberger House, 1042 Turtleback Lane, Port Townsend WA. Sold in 2009. Won a AIA Seattle Honor Award.


1980 - 6240 NE Tolo Road, Bainbridge Island WA. 4.78 acres. 1792 sf. Sold in 2017 to Niele Gillooly and Foster Careen.


1984 - The Jim and Lucille Parker Residence, 5949 Rose Loop NE, Bainbridge Island WA. Converted from a net drying shed in an old industrial harbor. Won an AIA National Design Award. Sold in 2018.

1987 - The Virginia Bloedel and Bagley Wright Guest House, 134 Huckleberry Trail, Seattle WA. Main house designed by Arthur Erickson. Featured in Architectural Record Houses of 1989. Built by Charter Construction; photo by Peter Aaron; structural engineer, Greg Hiatt. Sold to Richard Weisman.


1987 - The Tom and Lila Schmidt House, 141 Bachelor Road, Sequim WA. Built by Alford.  Sold in 2018.

Around 1988 - The George Gale Cool House, aka Bridge House, 4411 Point White Drive NE, Bainbridge Island WA. Featured in Architectural Record Houses of 1989. Built by James McDonald Kennedy; photo by Peter Aaron; structural engineer, Greg Hiatt. Still owned by Cool as of 2021.


1992 - 9701 SW Harbor Drive, Vashon WA. Sold in 2016. Status unknown.

2011 - The Dennis Awtrey House Bed and Breakfast, 38245 James Road, Nehalem OR. Commissioned in 2008.  Dennis Awtrey was the general contractor.
