WILLIAM P. (WILL) BRUDER, FAIA (1946-)

Self-trained as an architect, Will Bruder received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, taking supplemental courses in structural engineering, philosophy, art history, and urban planning. Bruder was a student of Paolo Soleri at his Cosanti studio, working on construction of the concrete vaults of the main drafting room, the 3D Jersey Project, and Soleri's book, Arcology: The City in the Image of Man. After graduating from college in 1969, Bruder spent a year as an apprentice of Gunnar Birkerts, where he worked on the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. In 1973, he obtained registration as an architect and opened his studio in 1974. He is best known for the Burton Barr Central Library in Phoenix. He moved to Portland OR in 2019. His archives are at Arizona State University. Research by Catherine Westergaard Cramer.

1994 - The Habitat for Humanity South Ranch Development, Phoenix AZ. In 1994 Habitat began building South Ranch II, its 195-home planned community near the cross streets of 16th Street and Alta Vista Road. At the time it was the largest project by Habitat for Humanity, which usually builds on a house-by-house basis. Four floor plans were designed, between 1200 and 1400 sf. The development was completed over 7 years, with 180 homes occupied by 2001. Above example is 1526 East St. Anne Avenue, completed in 1996 and sold in 1997. As of 2021, still owned by original owners, Leon and Lidia Chavez.
