GUY WESLEY PETERSON, FAIA (1953-)

Born in Cheyenne WY, the Peterson family moved to Sarasota FL. Peterson lived near the Sanderling Beach Club and attended high school at Riverview High School, both designs by architect Paul Rudolph. He was particularly influenced by the Syd Solomon Studio on Siesta Key by Gene Leedy. He attended college at the University of Florida, with a BA in design and a master's degree in architecture. After internships with James Holliday in Sarasota and Barrett Daffin Carlin in Tallahassee, he was a partner with Ivan Johnson 1980-2000 in Sarasota and went on his own in 2000.  Peterson restored the Scott Building (designed by William Rupp and Joseph Farrell), converting it into the Center for Architecture Sarasota, as of 2021 called Architecture Sarasota. The building was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.  He is an adjunct professor of architecture at the University of Florida and the author of Naked: The Architecture of Guy Peterson.

Models built.  Won a 2006 AIA Florida Merit Award. 23 modest modern homes challenged over four years by neighbors who felt the land was a de-facto parkeven though they did not own it.  After securing approvals, winning a year-long court battle, and ultimately putting in all the roads, water, sewer, the financial crash of 2008 killed the project.

Note:  The historic 1948 Revere Quality House is an early work of Ralph Twitchell and Paul Rudolph.  It published nationwide at the time and won many awards.  There is much history to this house including the design program by the Revere Copper and Brass company, the builder John Lambie and his new inventive Lamolithic construction techniques.  We restored this original home to its original design using Rudolph’s documents and designed a new companion or main house for the site.  The existing house became a guest house and pool cabana for the new pool.

2005 - The Elling O. Eide Compound, Sarasota FL. Dean Thompson, builder.  Deeded to the Elling O. Eide Foundation. Won a 2017 AIA Florida Honor Award; 2020 AIA Gulf Coast Merit Award.

Note:  The project is now called the Elling Eide Center.  It is a research library for Chinese scholars and a preserve.  The property is approximately 75 acres of undisturbed property on the Sarasota bayfront.  It was Elling Eide’s parents’ home and where he grew up.  He was an only child and never married.  He was a Marine and went on to Harvard to study Chinese literature.  He amassed the largest private Chinese library in America next to Harvard.  All this was stored in various “old Florida” structures on the site.  I was commissioned to design a new home and library for him.  This was a 13-year project representing the longest project in my carrer.  Unfortunately, Elling Eide passed away during construction and he left his property to a foundation.  They chose to complete the project as a research library and convert the residential component into administration, meeting facilities and a gallery to house his immense art collection as well.  Even though this was not completed as a residence, it was completed as Elling envisioned it with the residential spaces still incorporated but repurposed.  There is a guest residence incorporated into the building.
