USModernist Guy Peterson

GUY WESLEY PETERSON, FAIA (1953-)

Born in Cheyenne WY, the Peterson family moved to Sarasota FL. Peterson lived near the Sanderling Beach Club and attended high school at Riverview High School, both designs by architect Paul Rudolph. He was particularly influenced by the Syd Solomon Studio on Siesta Key by Gene Leedy. He graduated from the University of Florida with a BA in design and a Masters in architecture. After internships with James Holliday in Sarasota and Barrett Daffin Carlin in Tallahassee FL, he was a partner with Ivan Johnson (1980-1999) in Sarasota and went on his own in 2000.

Peterson restored the Scott Building (designed by William Rupp and Joseph Farrell), converting it into the Center for Architecture Sarasota, as of 2021 called Architecture Sarasota. The building was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. He is an adjunct professor of architecture at the University of Florida and the author of Naked: The Architecture of Guy Peterson. Research by Catherine Westergaard Cramer.
