IRVING WALKER (I. W. or IKE) COLBURN (1924-1992)

Colburn was educated at the American Academy in France, graduating in 1948.  He earned a BA in Architecture from Yale in 1951.  He taught at the University of Illinois 1958-1960.  He had two children, Clarissa and Oliver.  Archives are at the Art Institute of Chicago. 

 1956 - The George B. Rogers Residence Remodel, 751 North Sheridan Road, Lake Forest IL. Original home built in 1900.  Listed for sale starting in 1969 in newspapers, for sale off and on over the years. Sold in 2021 to Tyson and Kathleen Brill.

1956 - The Benjamin Carpenter Residence, Lake Forest IL. Destroyed. 

1956 - The Stacy and Kay Hill Residence, 132 South Green Bay Road, Lake Forest, IL.  Featured in Home and Garden, September 1958. House was updated and brick white-washed. Sold in 2016 to William Kulp.

1956 - The Frederick Pullman Residence Addtions, 700 North Mayflower Road, Lake Forest IL.  Built in the early 1900's by Frost and Granger architects with a 1926 remodel by Stanley Anderson. Sold in 2022 to a bank trust.

1957 - The Daniel (Danny) Haerther Renovation and Addition, 1005 East Illinois Road, Lake Forest IL. Haerther was a friend of Colburn's. The historic tea house of the Walden Estate, originally designed by architect Perkins under the direction of Mrs. Cyrus McCormick and landscaped by Manning, was reputedly built to host the Emperor of Japan during a visit to Mrs. McCormick. In the mid-1950s, as the estate was being dismantled, Charles D. Peacock Haerther, great-grandson of jeweler Elijah Peacock (founder of C.D. Peacock in 1837), purchased the tea house along with 1.28 acres of land. Haerther commissioned architect Colburn to adapt the tea house into a home, blending Perkins' original design with modernist additions. Sold in 2010 to Christopher and Lisa Garrity.

1957 – The William B. and Adele Mcilvaine III Renovation, 372 Ravine Park, Lake Forest IL. Built in 1928 from Stanley Anderson designs and fully gutted and renovated in 2015. Sold in 2018 to Tiago Rodrigues.

1959 - The Boyd and Nancy Clow Edwards Residence, Green Village NJ. Status unknown.

1959 - The Francis and Jean Farwell Renovation, 1590 N. Waukegan, Lake Forest IL. Original house built in 1950. Francis stayed in the home after Jean's death in 1999. In 2009, the house was destroyed by a fire.



1959 - The William and Alice McLennan Residence, 1101 North Lake Road, Lake Forest IL. Sold to Stephen and Mercedes Foley. Won an Outstanding Architectural Prize in the 1960 AIA Homes for Better Living Contest.

1959 - The John and Louise Runnells Residence, 1150 North Lake Road, Lake Forest IL. Commissioned by the Runnells, who were influenced by the McLennan Residence. Sold in 2020 to a trustee.

1959 - The Isabel Harper Residence, St. Mary's Road, Libertyville IL. She died in 1969. Status unknown.

1960 - The Charles C. Haffner Jr. Pool House, 902 Green Bay Road, Lake Forest IL. Colburn married the Haffner's daughter, Frances, the same year. House built in 1915, but status of pool house unknown.

Around 1964 - The Elliott Donnelley Train Station, 1050 Melody Road, Lake Forest IL. Room for a collection of scale model trains. House designed in 1955 by Walter Frazier, architect. A 3-bedroom guest house with 2-car garage was built next door at 1030 Melody Road for the Donnelly's and that house was designed by Colburn. eBoth properties were sold in 2015 to Richard Colburn, no relation to the architect.

1971 - Marcor Housing Systems, based in Denver, Colorado, undertook a project to develop middle-income housing with prestressed concrete panels, a concept initiated by Montgomery Ward's President Robert Brooker. This resulted in the construction of a 100-unit complex, which became the only development of its kind built by Marcor Housing Systems. Status unknown.

1976 - The Duane and Cecilia Stranahan Addition, 577 Front Street, Perrysburg OH. The original house was built around 1935 by his parents.  He grew up in the home. He and second wife, Cecily, lived in the home during the 1970's. Sometime later, the family executed an easement on the house and surrounding property to save it from future development. They create a nature conservancy 577 Foundation in 1997, which is  based there.

In 1984, Colburn designed a new entrance porch, which suggests that at least this portion may have been constructed. It’s uncertain if the porch currently visible is Colburn’s design. Sold in 2024 by his estate to Michael and Kathy Winstone.

1978 - The Anne Bell Burrage Residence Remodel, 74 Essex Road, Ipswich MA. She was married to Albert Cameron Burrage Jr., who passed in 1978. In 1953, the front part of 68 Essex Road was separated from the rear section and was moved to the adjoining empty lot at 74 Essex Road. Purchased by Anne Bell Burrage, wife of Albert Cameron Burrage Jr. Sold to Clyde and Jan Gunsaulus. Sold in 2021 to Isabel Bacon and Chase Delano.

1978 - The John and Cecile Carver Residence, Scarborough ME. Sold in 2012 to Christopher Coyne. Destroyed. A new house was built on the site in 2014.

1978 - The Ames and Ruth Stevens Addition and Remodel, 15 Homestead Drive, Gloucester MA. The Stevens purchased the home in 1973. Sold in 1994 to Jameson French, who transferred it to White Wings Gloucester in 2016.

1978 - The Harlow Carpenter Residence Remodel, Vero Beach FL. Unbuilt. Possibly unbuilt.

Around 1979 - The Major Reuben Colburn Renovation, 33 Arnold Road, Pittston ME. Major Reuben Colburn (1737-1818) built the house in 1765, but it fell out of the Colburn family in the early 1950's. Purchased by the state in 1972. The renovation was a replacement of the floor of the house. Last renovation in 2015.

1979 - The Arthur and Mary Kneibler Residence, 105 North Mayflower Road, Lake Forest IL. Sold in 2018. Sold in 2020 to Karl Gedge. Designed by Ike Colburn to mimic the French country farmhouse of David Adler, an architect admired by both the owner and Colburn.

1979 - The Mr. and Mrs. Bent Mogelberg Renovation, Gloucester MA. This was a renovation of an 18th century house in the historic fishing enclave.

Build started by Colburn, completed by another contractor. In 2010, the Trustees received 37 acres from the Batchelder family. The Batchelder family still owns 66 acres of the property.

1980 - The Maria Cole Apartment at the Ritz, 1 Newbury Street, Boston MA. Maria was Nat King Cole's widow. She lived in a condo at the Ritz. Sold in 2006 to the Taj Boston. Sold in 2019 to Newbury Boston. Status unknown.

1980 - Gladebrook Residences, Tulsa OK. Developed by George Kravis as a cluster of small modernist homes in a gated neighborhood. Eight were designed by Colburn. Four were built, one by Donald Honn. Status unknown.

1981 - The Paul G. Jameson Residence, Mountain Lake, Lake Wales FL. Unbuilt. Status unknown.

1982 - 54 Beacon Street Renovation, Boston MA. Original 1808 house designed by Asher Benjamin. Purchased by the Colburns in 1981, this Boston house was built in 1808 by James Colburn and designed by Asher Benjamin. Colburn restored original entry and remodeled apartments on each of three floors. Renovation retains classical detailing and curved walls which were characteristic of the Federal style at its highest level.

1982 - The Gail Chester "Rod" and Joan Belden Residence, Rochester NY. This is the second of two Rochester houses, the first being the Stein house who were friends of the Beldens, who were local tastemakers. The Belden house was long, seemingly one story in front, and dimensioned like a modern ranch house. The roof has shed-roof skylights, which signal expansiveness within and that becomes apparent in back where the land drops off and the elevation attains three full stories in height. They moved to Palo Alto CA in 1989. Status unknown.

1982 - The Mrs. John Cabot Residence Addition and Renovation, Manchester MA. Original house 1870.  Added a sunroom and converted a former stable to include two new apartments.  Status unknown.

1984 - The El Caserio Remodel, Mountain Lake, 2300 North Scenic Highway, Lake Wales FL. Address may be a main address for development with each house having a specific, unpublished number. Original house built 1928-29 for Alfred Chapin, and the architect was Charles Wait. Sold in the 1950's to Roger Babson. Later the home fell into disrepair and was divided into 4 units. The 4 units sold in 2013 and 2014 to Allison and George Wood, who were or are restoring the home to its original state.

1985 - The Scott Struthers Residence Remodel, Mountain Lake, Lake Wales FL.  Original 1919 house designed by Parsons Wait Goodell of Boston.  Status unknown.

1986 - Gaylord Building Renovation, 200 West 8th Street, Lockport IL. First used as a warehouse for the I & M Canal. Sold in 1878 to George Gaylor for his dry goods and grain store. Sold in 1886 to Norton & Co to be used as a warehouse. Sold in 1890 to Barrows Lock Co. who modified the stone structure and its surrounding structures and built a sizeable brick structure on the west side of the Italianate addition. Sold to Yale & Towne, who acquired Barrows Lock. Sold in 1945. It became a print shop, then later a plumbing shop. Sold in the early 80's to Gaylord Donnelley, George Gaylord's grandson, who rehabilitated the building. During the extensive renovation process, the Gaylord Lockport Company removed the 1906 brick addition over the original stone warehouse, as well as the other late nineteenth and twentieth century additions. The structure’s new look reflected its historic character at the time that George Gaylord owned the building. The Gaylord Lockport Company chose to “adaptively reuse” the building to accommodate contemporary needs. These included the Public Landing Restaurant, the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery, and the Illinois Department of Conservation Visitor’s Center. Status unknown.

1987 - The Whittemore House Renovation, 179 Washington Street, Gloucester MA. Converted to six apartments. Later converted to condos. Sold in 1987 to Steven and Sharon Howard.

1991 - The 13 Chestnut Street Restoration, 13 Chestnut Street, Boston MA. Original 1806 townhouse was built by Charles Bulfinch for Samuel Gridley and Julia Ward. Currently owned by Clarissa (Colburn) Hunnewell and Frances Colburn under Senior Estate LLC.

1991 - The George and Emily Lewis Renovation, aka Assington, 172 Forest Street, Sherborn MA. Original house built in 1929 by Boston architect, William Aldrich. Built for George's parents, George and Muriel Lewis. Still in the Lewis family as of 2024. Declared a Historic Place in 1986.
