IRVING WALKER (I. W., or IKE) COLBURN (1924-1992)

Colburn was educated at the American Academy in France, graduating in 1948.  He earned a BA in Architecture from Yale in 1951.  He taught at the University of Illinois 1958-1960.  He had two children, Clarissa and Oliver.  Archives are at the Art Institute of Chicago. Research by Elizabeth Askren.

1963 - The Richard J. and Eileen Globensky Residence, St. Joseph MI. Having six children shaped the design of the house. Eileen Globensky was the interior designer. Sold to James and Susan Annable who did a restoration. They are still the owners.






1963 - The John A. Kittermaster Residence, 330 Thornmeadow Road, Riverwoods IL. He lived there for four years and added a large indoor pool. Sold around 1985 to David and Maxine Unger, who did their own renovation. Sold in 2021 to Amy Pacis and Rolando Arroyo.



1964 - The John and Constance Coleman Gatehouse Addition and Remodel. Lake Forest IL.  Status unknown.


Around 1964 - The Elliott Donnelley Train Station, 1050 Melody Road, Lake Forest IL. Room for a collection of scale model trains. House designed in 1955 by Walter Frazier, architect. A 3-bedroom guest house with 2-car garage was built next door at 1030 Melody Road for the Donnelly's and that house was designed by Colburn. Both properties were sold in 2015 to Richard Colburn, no relation to the architect.

1973 - The Robert and Sally Brooker Residence III, Mountain Lake, Lake Wales FL.  Sally Brooker's wanted a modern house, but not too modern.


1973 - The Philip Dexter Estate Renovation, Manchester MA. Original designed in 1908  by Charles Coggswell. The Colburns purchased the property shortly before renovations began, which involved transforming the swimming pool pavilion into a new residence and converting both the barn and carriage house into additional living spaces. Sold to Fabrizio Detoledo.  Sold in 1998 to T. Philip and Cynthia Comenos. Sold in 2023 to Sean Gildea.


1973 - The Gerald and Nan Miller Residence, 26281 West River Road, Perrysburg OH. Roberta Flack performed at a party for the completion of the house. Original house built in 1932. On the market sale reads: "Private retreat along the Maumee River! 20 acs of riverfront property adorned by renowned architect I.W. Colburn's structural mastery. Mid century masterpiece boasts unique floorplan surrounding courtyard." Sold to Barbara A Phibbs circa early 2000's. For sale in 2024.


1974 - The Robert and Mary Upton Residence, Carefree AZ.  Status unknown.


1975 - The Albert and Madzie Beveridge Residence Remodel, Beverly Farms MA. Original 1904 estate built by Guy Lowell. The remodel consisted of removing a servants wing and providing space for a modern kitchen which was moved toward the front of the house. Sold prior to 1994 to Everett Street and David Grace. Sold in 1999 to Molly Ryan. Sold in 2021 to Christopher Church. 


1975 - The John O. and Olivia Parker Residence Remodel, 229 Summer Street, Manchester MA. Original house built in 1882 for Henry Dana III. The house is still owned by Olivia, who is an artist. The renovation involved a new front entrance and a general updating of the interior.


1975 - The Arthur and Molly Stern Residence, 14 Elmwood Hill Lane, Brighton NY. After Molly Stern's death in 1983, the house was sold to Anthony Wilson. Sold in 2019 to Richard Sands.


1975 - The Thomas and Eleanor Williams Residence, 220 Atlantic Avenue, Cohasset MA. Deeded to daughter Susan Williams Dickie who passed in 2023. Transferred in 2018 to 220 Atlantic Avenue LLC. 


1976 - The Alexander Forbes Renovation, 4 Blossom Lane, Manchester MA. Original house buit in 1910. Complete renovation and remodeling of main house and garage apartment. The renovation also included a new pool and cabana. Sold in 1997 to Andrea Irvine. Sold in 2000 to Robert Nelson. Sold in 2001 to Richard and Pamela Mason.
