Architectural Design was first launched in 1930 as Architectural Design and Construction in the UK. In 1946 Monica Pidgeon became editor and developed the magazine under the ownership of Standard Catalogue Company. Contributors during the 1960s included Theo Crosby and Kenneth Frampton. When Andreas Papadakis bought the financially troubled magazine in 1976, it became a beacon for Postmodernism, Deconstructivism, and Classicism, unwilling to follow Modernism closely as most magazines did. He also published several smaller magazines, such as Art and Design. He sold the portfolio in 1990.
As of 2025,
AD is still published by Axiomatic Editions, a division of the US publishers ORO.
Edited by Neil Spiller since 2018.
